EDUCATION OVERVIEW The Nigerian Institute of Shipping has the reputation of providing first class education to the shipping profession, NIS qualification confer a status not equated elsewhere in the Industry. NIS delivers its main education programme direct from its headquarters in Nigeria through its various recognized training Centre (RTC’s). Every year, over 200 students sits for the professional examination nationwide. Following a five year aggregated period in the industry, successful student can then apply for membership with all the career advantages and benefits that confers. Furthermore, the institute runs a joint diploma programme with the University of Lagos in shipping and ports Administration. The institute from time organizes other aspect of training programme that will continually position her members in the industry. Qualifying Examination Structure (A) Shipping Technicians – Dockworkers Certificate Programme DC 101 Introduction to Shipping DC 102 Communication and use of English DC 103 Introduction to Port Operations DC 104 Dockworkers Practice DC 105 Business Mathematics Candidates who sit and pass the Technician course are eligible to register for the professional examinations. The graduates of this level are expected to work as wharf supervisors or operatives. (B) Professional Examination Structure. – Foundation of Associate Level. Professional Associates are expected to be engaged as assistant managers in the shipping or allied companies.
