HISTORY OF NIS. The Nigerian Institute Of Shipping the first indigenous professional body was established in 20th October, 1983 following the major shipping conferences held in lagos and Port Harcourt in 1981 and 1982 by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council. As a matter of fact, its emergence was a direct answer to the call by shipping technocrats, suppliers, manufacturers, importer and exporters, bankers and insurance houses for an organized professional body to promote and regulate he shipping industry in Nigeria,. On 2nd July, 1986 the then Minister of Internal Affairs, Col. John .N. Shagaya, endorsed the Certificate of Incorporation with registration number 3953, there by formalizing the existence of the first Nigerian professional body on shipping known today as “ THE NIGERIAN INSTITUTE OF SHIPPING” THE CENTRE Nigerian Institute Of Shipping has it national headquarter in Lagos, with branches in Port Harcourt, Ikeja, Warri, Calabar , Kano and Owerri. The Nigeria Institute of Shipping is a non-profit service organization operating as a specialized national shipping professional body. Policy direction is provided by the Board of Government representative of all the major sectors of the maritime industry in the country. The Executive function of the Institute is in the hands of its Registrar. AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE INSTITUTEFundamentally, the main objectives of the Institute is to stimulate and facilitate international business cooperation at all levels and in all aspect of the shipping industry. Drawing from the full range of expertise within the shipping industry in the country, the institute will among other things:-
